Flour square - Abstract expression

Cultural

A retrospective of the last twenty-five years by the painter Gonzague Chupin. Watercolours and gouaches, oils, collages: a journey from expression to abstraction through a hundred or so works.

abstraction through a hundred or so works.
Expressionism and Abstraction, two artistic movements that illuminated the 20th century. Painter: Gonzague Chupin.

Expression first. The watercolourist's landscapes dance; the roofs of Alsace waltz to inspire a canvas. Dictated by the musical undulations of Vosges balloons, shapes form an alphabet to condemn violence, speak out against the horrors of war and sing of life in all its forms - morphology.

Collages of scraps of photos and magazines lend themselves to expression. They also allow me to move towards abstraction: my collages of letters are illegible.

Abstraction came from Estève, Soulage and above all Jacques Villon and François Kupka, who cultivated beautiful drawing in Puteaux. They led me towards a more rigorous style of painting. A framework of eight parts, three on one side, five on the other. That's my current credo, which I'm going to have to overcome.
