L'Onde - Naharin's Virus
This hypnotically beautiful piece brings to a climax what choreographer Ohad Naharin is famous for: Gaga Dance. A form of movement that gives the dancers fascinating freedom of expression.
What is the virus that runs through this black and white world? The dance, a trance that takes hold of the bodies of seventeen dancers? The stage virus? Or the deconstruction at work in this masterly composition by the Israeli choreographer? The text recited by the dancers, Outrage au public by Peter Handke, sounds like an injunction to shake up the certainties of a dual black and white world.
In a space where the very idea of creation is called into question, the only thing that remains is the power of gesture. That of the Batsheva, to the traditional music of Palestinian composer Habib Alla Jamal. Offering fascinating ensembles of shared energy, while allowing each performer complete freedom of movement, the piece lingers in the memory like a subtle fragrance of jubilant subversion.
