Théatre Montansier - Le Soleil des Scorta
Le Soleil des Scorta - Theatre and music
Laurent Gaudé tells the story of the Scorta Mascalzone, a line of brigands and thieves plagued by a curse that everyone is struggling to overcome. In the piazza of the small village of Montepuccio, nestled in the heart of Puglia, the old villagers are so old they are ageless. Their hands battered and reddened with tomato sauce, these old women tell the story of Luciano, Rocco, Carmela, Domenico, Giuseppe, Raffaele, Donato, Elia and Anna Scorta. Like the spaghetti they tirelessly cook, the thread of the story weaves its way through the Scortas, who appear before them, re-enacting their own story, that of a cursed family haunted by the ghosts of the past. In the Scorta family, money is often dirty, crime frequent and vengeance gnaws at them to the point of crime. The siblings seem to be rooted in Montepuccio like olive trees in terra rossa. Any attempt to escape is doomed to failure. But in the face of adversity, what remains is the family and the name Scorta, which unites those who bear it. If the sun burns the skin, it also consumes the soul. And it drives you mad.
From traditional Italian music to twentieth-century pop, the music will give voice to this family story that has been shaped by a century of history.
