Boat at the lock at Bougival by Alfred Sisley, 1873

Cultural

Seen from the Island of La Loge – At the end of the path adjacent to the locks, the artist painted the vivid reflections in the water and did not hesitate to capture the presence of a barge tugboat at the lock by depicting smoke coming out its funnel.

The painting portrays the tip of Gautier Island, situated just opposite and part of Croissy Island where Monet and Renoir painted La Grenouillère resort in 1869. The lock keepers’ house depicted on the left-hand side of this canvas still exists (its windows, roof and the chimneys are recognisable, but the dogs sitting there have gone)
